God's grace for Vera

A few weeks back, Vera was baptized! Baptizing our children has always been something that was very important and special to me. In fact, I have vivid memories of baptizing my baby dolls growing up. I filled the orange tupperware bowl with water on top of my dresser and put a little gown on my doll. My mom and dad made great godparents to Sally. ;)

Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call. Acts 2:38-39

In real life, we know that even babies aren't perfect, and all of us are affected by the brokenness of our world. Baptism is an immense gift from God, a pouring out of his grace upon us in the midst of brokenness. All parents want to give wonderful gifts to their children, and God is no different. In baptism he gives us his Spirit to be near to us, giving us faith and comfort through life's challenges, healing us from our own brokenness, and helping us when we encounter the world's.

Vera was able to wear the same baptismal gown that I wore when I was baptized, and was also worn by many other women in my family. It reminds me of the legacy of faith that we have. John and I prayed many times for the gift of a child, but she is not here for us. She is not here to serve us or make us happy, and although she brings us amazing joy, this is not really her purpose. More than anything, we pray she will serve God in all the ways he has already established for her.

Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. ... May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands. Psalm 90: 1-2,16-17
