Our Journey at the Seminary

John finally started school just this past August. Classes are going great and he is really enjoying it so far! So what has John been doing up until he started school?

Well, he got a job as a server in a great restaurant and worked part time there from February through November, when he upped his course load for the second term. The job worked out really well since it was flexible, and it looks like he’ll be able to go back to work there over the summer if he wants. Life is a learning experience and there is no better way to learn patience than in the food industry!

So when John wasn’t working and basically doing everything else around the house… he was learning Greek and Hebrew! The seminary requires these classes as prerequisites so John had to pass the qualifying exams before starting class. Otherwise to take them at the seminary is expensive and doesn’t even count toward the degree.

John knew Greek from college and so he brushed up on that for a couple of months and passed on the first try. He hadn’t had any Hebrew, so he sat in front of the TV to learn it from the video tapes of the seminary Hebrew classes. A few months and a couple of tests later he was free and clear! He also had to pass tests in other topics – new testament, old testament, and Christian doctrine.

SO… it kind of seems like he’s been in school all along, even though he started a year after we moved. But ever since classes began in August, we’ve been taking advantage of a lot that the seminary has to offer students. When John started, different church groups just lavished things on us – books, school supplies, and other resources. Besides that, we now get to take advantage of the seminary food bank for students, which easily saves us about 50% a month on our grocery bill. The school has a great intramural sports program, and as you can imagine John joined in on the soccer team as soon as he got the chance! The season proved to be a lot of fun and the team learned that winning isn’t very important. :)

When it got cold John started in on some of the other intramural sports, and cleaned house in foosball... no surprises there.

We have quite a few frustrations with the seminary too, and a number of challenges ahead. It is hard to live life not knowing where God will take you next, but who really knows that ... we are growing into this idea slowly but surely. We thank all of you for your prayers and support during a time of many mixed emotions!
