Vicarage Update

It's hard to believe that I'm already almost 2 months into my vicarage year! Things have been whirring by, especially with the trip to the Smoky Mountains and our crazy 42-hour excursion to New York City.

Let me give an update on some of the things I've been doing.

1. I was asked to lead the Monday night worship service and preach on my very first day. This was stressful, but it turned out OK. Kelly and I really like the Monday night service because it's in a small chapel and it feels more relaxed and intimate. Usually about 15-20 people come to that service.

2. I've been leading a weekly Bible Study on Thursday mornings for the Quilting Club. We finished up the Sermon on the Mount and now are starting to tackle the book of Isaiah. The Quilters work for two hours on both Tuesdays and Thursdays to make these enormous and intricate quilts in order to raise money for the church. Usually they keep quilting during Bible Study, and some other church members show up just for the study. I always look forward to Thursday mornings!

3. I get to go and visit members who are homebound or in the hospital. This gives me the chance to really get to know some of the members pretty well. We chat and pray together and read the Bible together. This week I'll be starting my second round of visits, so I'm looking forward to more conversations and stories.

4. This past week, I preached three different sermons. So yeah, I've been getting a lot of experience in the pulpit! I already feel much more comfortable and am learning something new with each experience. Pastor has me preaching on Sundays every third week right now, but in a few more weeks we'll be sharing every other Sunday. So, if you want to come visit us in St. Louis over some weekend, you've got a 50% chance of getting to hear a Vicar Hile sermon.

By the way, we know you all voted for Just John in our survey, but it turns out you (or we) did not have a say in the matter. Vicar Hile is gaining fast, although Just John and Just Vicar have sizeable followings as well. Here are a couple pictures of my office. Loving the bookshelf!

Is your desk really that clean?

We moved a few things to the side for the picture, but yeah, it's pretty clean. Most of what isn't on my computer fits on the bookshelf or in the desk. Plus, the desk is bigger than our dinner table!

Well, Vicar Hile, as you are now known, it looks like you've gotten off to a great start and have had some great experiences! I hope I do have a chance to visit sometime during the year!!!

Wow, sweet office!

New York City? You can't leave us hanging like that!

I'm definitely know here as Vicar Todd ... but you're right, it's one of those things that I didn't really choose, it just happened. I'm pretty sure no one knows my last name. Kelly, however, is usually referred to as Mrs. Vicar.

Hope all is well! I'm getting back from our mission trip to Tennessee tomorrow. I'll have to call you to catch up on things!

Miss you both!
